Glossary of Common Words/Terms:
Aedra - Also called the 9 Divines. The entities of the universe that made the world and all that inhabit it. Considered the ‘good gods’ of the world.
Aldmer - First Folk. The proto-mer that lived upon the Sumerset Isle. Supposed race from the lost continent Aldmeris. They are the ancestors to the best people, the Argonians and Khajiit. Also the ancestor of the Mer. They spread throughout the lands, evolved, and became distinct races. Those that stayed upon the Summerset Isled became the Altmer.
Altmer - High Elves. They hail from the Sumerset Isles
Argonian - People of the Root. They are the little-understood reptilian denizens of Black Marsh.
Atronach – A type of Daedra (Singular Daedroth). Also known as an Elemental as there are three types of Atronach: Flame, Frost, and Storm. All three are quite dangerous and summonable by powerful magicians. Flame casts fireballs. Frost cast ice shards. Storm casts lightning bolts.
Ayleid - Wild Elves.
Bosmer - Wood Elves. They hail from Valenwood
Breton - The human decendants of the Aldmeri-Nedic Manmer of the Merethic Era. They hail from High Rock. They are more human than elf, but upon close inspection of their eyebrows, ears, or high cheekbones, they present with elvish traits.
Chaurus - Deadly insect-like creatures that live deep underground which are as tall as humans (some as large as horses) and can spit poisonous liquid that will paralyze and drain the target.
Chimer - People of the North; also called Changed Folk. Decendants of the Admer that spread from the Summerset Isles. Those that went to Morrowind (the majority of the race) became the Dunmer. Those that found new lives within Cyrodiil (less than 5% of the race) became the Silveryn.
Companion - A slave with significant honor or position within the master or mistresses house. The companion is the common man’s housecarl.
Companions - Formally; The Companions, also known as ‘The Circle’. An association of fighters that is based in the building known as Jorrvaskr within Whiterun. The leader of the guild is Kodiak Whitemane.
Daedra Princes - The more powerful of Daedra. Not all Daedric Princes are evil (nor are they all male), but they are considered foul by the followers of the Aedra. However, most wish to toy or destroy mankind.
Daedra - Various levels of dark creatures, not all Daedra are princes. Compared to demons beneath devils. (Singular Daedroth)
Daedra Heart - A rare and valuable item that can be used to smith Daedric Armor.
Dark Brotherhood - The association of assassins. Commonly known as one of the scary aspects in childhood stories; “the Dark Brotherhood is coming for you.”
Dragon Claws – These are ‘keys’ used to open ancient Nordic puzzle doors. There are many types of claws.
Golden Claw – First to be found and is used to open the Bleak Falls Barrow Tombs
Draugr - Undead of Skyrim. Can be animated by Necromancers or preternaturally animated by the various Daedra Princes of the outer planes. There are several types of Draugr within Skyrim; Common, Restless, Wight, Scourge, Deathlord, and Death Overlord.
Dremora - Human-type of lower Daedra that are often hostile albeit rare in Skyrim. They can be conjured and found in and around Daedra shrines.
Dreugh - One of the large insect like races that live in various environments. Hostile to humanoids and often solitary.
Dunmer - The Dark Elves, not like Drow, but named for their color of skin being darker and ashen. Not necessarily evil, but many do pray to Daedric Princes.
Dwemer - Deep Elves, Deep Folk, Dwarves. The extinct race of technologically advanced Mer that were killed off by the Dunmer in a great war. Originally located underneath the lands of Morrowind, they expanded throughout all of the continent of Tamriel within the First Era before mankind and other Mer set foot upon the lands. Their abandoned cities and strongholds are found all throughout Tamriel’s depths. And are quite dangerous.
Falmer - Formerly Snow Elves. They were once a noble race who were displaced by the Nords and then twisted by the Dwemer into a blind slave race.
Follower - Persons or creatures who can carry your objects or fight by your side. In addition, they can perform tasks that you’re not able to accomplish on your own.
Giant - One of the many larger humanoid races of Skyrim. They are considered a nemesis to the Nord, yet still trade freely with the non hostile clans. There are two types of Giant, Hill and Stone. The Hill Giants are typically hostile while the Stone are typically approachable.
Hagraven - Powerful magical creatures that are well versed in destructive magic. They are considered an abomination of Mer. Akin to the fairytale witches.
Housecarl - A personal bodyguard appointed to jarls and their thanes. Housecarls are free men and women who are voluntarily sworn to protect their masters with their own lives.
Imperial - Humans that hail from Cyrodiil.
Imperial Army - The military of the Empire of Tamriel
Jagged Crown - It is made from the finest of Nord Steel with affectations of true Dragonbone and teeth. It is believed to date back to the time of King Harald and is said to contain a portion of the power of every king or queen who wore it since the first era. It is truly the crown of the high kings of Skyrim and the last monarch to wear the crown was King Borgas, yet was lost when he was killed in the Wild Hunt of 1E 369.
Khajiit - Feline humanoids hailing from the province of Elsweyr. There are many subraces, including Leonis, Tigrus, Panthar, and Cheenas.
Lesser Daedra - Compared to demons and infernal creatures.
Lupinus - Lupine humanoids hailing from the Dog Isles to the south east of Tamriel. They are a race that is extremely rare and one can go their entire lives without seeing one. They have two subraces, Dingo and Worgen.
Maormer - Sea or Tropical Elves. They reside on the island kingdom of Pyandonea, far south of the Summerset Isles.
Mer - Word meaning elf. Is used to refer to any of the Elder Races of Mundus.
Mundus - The plane or realm of existence that encompasses Nirn and all that exists within.
Nirn - The planet on which the game is set.
Nord - Fair skinned humans of Skyrim
Orsimer - Orcs.
Redguard - The most naturally talented warriors in Tamriel. They are dark-skinned, wiry-haired and hail from Hammerfell.
Scamp - One of the lesser Daedra from the plane of Oblivion.
Skeever - Giant rat.
Spriggan - Magical plant-like creatures found in deep forests of Skyrim.
Stewart - In government; a person responsible for the day-to-day running of the hold. Second only to the jarl. Stewards are also good sources of quests.
Stones of Barenziah - One of the many magical gemstones that were owned by the master thief Barenziah. The gemstones were fixed into a great helm that he wore. It’s rumored that the helm (with the stones) gave him great powers and the mastery of all things ‘Rogue’.
Stormcloaks Rebels who seek to secede from the Empire of Tamriel. Led by Uriel Stormcloak who is the Jarl of Windhelm.
Talos - A major god in Skyrim who’s worship has been banned as part of the Empire’s peace treaty with the Thalamor. Windhelm is the only temple in Skyrim where followers are allowed to openly worship Talos.
Tamriel - The continent in which the game takes place. It is composed of 9 provinces: Black Marsh, Cyrodiil, Elseweyr, Hammerfell, High Rock, Morrowind, Skyrim, Sumerset Isle and Valenwood.
Thalmor Justicars - Also known as Thalmor. A political/religious organization composed of elves (typically high elves) that believe their race and beliefs are superior to all others.
Thane - An honorary title presented by the jarl of a hold to individuals of high esteem. The bestowed title is one of both recognition and prestige. Thanes may be chosen due to their importance to the city for their heroic deeds.
Troll – Creatures of Skyrim that live within the mountains and icy planes.
Welkynd Stone - Glowing cyan stones found in Ayleid ruins. They can be used to fully recharge magical items, though the stone is destroyed in the process. Often used as light fixtures.
Wisp / Wispmother - One of the many magical creatures that exist in the world. Is able to cast an elemental energy (fire, cold, wind, electricity, water, etc)
